Overview
This FAQ is designed to cover the questions regarding running MicroStation V8i SS2 and later in a Virtualized environment.
What versions of MicroStation are supported in a Virtualized environment?
MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 2) and later running on Citrix XenApp 5.0 64-bit for Windows Server 2008.
MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) and later running on Citrix XenApp 6.0 64-bit or Citrix XenApp 7.6 for Windows Server 2008 R2.
MicroStation CONNECT Edition and later running on Citrix XenApp 7.6
Other versions of MicroStation may operate as expected, however results may vary. All other versions and environments are not supported.
Are other Bentley applications tested and supported in a Virtualized environment?
Other applications are not currently supported. However, testing is on-going therefore additional Bentley applications may be supported in the future.
Will older versions of MicroStation be Citrix Ready verified?
No. Only versions of MicroStation V8i SS2 and later will be certified. All other versions and environments are not supported. There have been reported success with older versions of MicroStation and certain Citrix applications/configurations. For more information, feel free to search and/or post your inquiry on Be Communities forum (http://communities.bentley.com/).
What about other Citrix versions and other Virtualization environments?
Citrix XenApp 5.0 64-bit, Citrix XenApp 6.0 64-bit and Citrix XenApp 7.6 are the only versions that have been tested and are supported at this time. There are no plans to test MicroStation and/or other Bentley applications on other Citrix versions/applications/configurations. However, there are considerations to test Bentley applications on Microsoft App-V, but so far nothing has being decided.
What Server Operating System version is required?
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or higher.
Note: XenApp 5.0 is not currently supported on Microsoft Server 2008 R2.
How do I get support setting up or configuring our Virtualized environment?
Installing, configuring, and optimizing performance is supported through the providers of the virtualized solution and/or your IT department.
What types of issues will Bentley investigate?
Issues that relate specifically to functionally within the supported environment.
How many MicroStation instances can connect to a Citrix Server?
The number of connections is based on the hardware requirements of Citrix. Bentley has no guidance on how many connections can be made.
What is a Virtualized Environment?
This can mean a lot of different things and includes many technologies depending on the type of virtualization. MicroStation was tested and supported through Application Virtualization.
Application Virtualization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_virtualization)
The application is delivered from the server to the client at run-time (when the application is started from the client). The application is not "installed" in the traditional sense, but the application will function as if it was.
What is Citrix and XenApp?
Citrix Systems, Inc. is an American multinational corporation that provides server and desktop virtualization, networking, software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud computing technologies.
Citrix XenApp is an application virtualization/application delivery product that allows users to connect to their corporate applications. XenApp can either host applications on central servers and allow users to interact with them remotely or stream and deliver them to user devices for local execution.
Note: More information can be obtained from the Citrix home page (http://www.citrix.com)
What are the Benefits of running MicroStation V8i (Select Series 2) and above in a virtualized environment?
