Problem

When I use the Item Types 'Import/Export' tool to import Item Types Instance data from an Excel file the Message Center reports  "Cannot import item type instance" despite the data originally was Exported from MicroStation using the same tool.

(Selecting the "Cannot import item type instance" displays further details, in this instance "The specified Excel file contains invalid data").

Solution

In this instance the exported Item Type Instance data had been edited in Excel and the data format of the cell containing a date had been changed, no longer matching the Item Type Property Definition inside MicroStation.

To resolve

1. Open the Excel file containing the Item Type Instance data in Excel.

2. Locate the modified data Cells (In this case the Date of the Inspected Item)

3. Correct the data / format to match Item Types Property Definition

4. Save the file

5. In MicroStation select the Import/Export Item Type tool and Import the corrected Excel files Instance data

6. Verify the data was imported, by checking the Message Center and the elements Properties
