How can Text be modified using the Element Selection tool so that it scales in one direction or axis only?

Background

For example, selecting the display handles of the text with the Element Selection tool and scaling the text by moving the mouse, scales the text proportionally. Can it be confined to scale in one direction only, like horizontal x direction for example?

Steps to Accomplish

To modify / manipulate or scale the text in one direction / axis only with the Element Selection tool:

1. Select the Text with the Element Selection tool
2. Left click once on the square (usually blue colored) Display Handles

3. Tap the Alt key on the keyboard once and move the mouse in the desired direction

4. Text should scale or stretch in one axis only, it will not remain proportional
