Problem Description
When exporting a Microstation 3D Model with standard element types to STL file format much of the exported model does not convert. This can be verified by viewing the exported STL file in various viewers or by importing the STL file back into another Microstation design file.
Solution
Looking at the types of elements used within various 3D design files produced in MicroStation it was found that Surface type elements were not able to convert to an equivalent elements in the STL file format.
To resolve this problem it is suggested to convert these Surface elements to another type.
- Select all elements and drop them to their individual geometry. The plain line and line string type of elements convert to the STL format ok including any Solid and Shape type elements that were converting previously.
- Using the Select By Attributes tool under the Edit menu choose all Surface type of elements.
- Using the Convert To Surface tool, using Merge into Single Surface option, convert these to Bspline Surface elements.
